AHA Governing Committee Meeting Summary: September 2022
Here is a summary of the September 2022 meeting of your American Homebrewers Association Governing Committee (GC):
- The GC reviewed a summary document of AHA resources and benefits.
- The AHA is researching an evolution to the AHA Forum and Brew Guru.
- The GC discussed the state of homebrewing and AHA membership.
- Overview of new Working Groups and Subcommittees
- Subcommittees: Exec, and new Events & Education subcommittees.
- Working Groups: Industry, Competitions, Seminar Selections.
- Discussed Basecamp workflow, how to become a working group, and how to become a subcommittee.
- Established that training of Chairs/co-chairs is required before AHA members at large can be placed into any of these sub-groups.
- Learn to Homebrew Day – November 5 overview.
- They are a tool for shops to spread awareness and for clubs to recruit members/and mentor new homebrewers.
- Helping newbies to the AHA feel welcome and invited is a priority.
- 2023 planning was discussed.
- Homebrew Club Model Code of Conduct and BRU Coalition action plan update discussed.
- ‘The Art of Inclusive Communication’ seminar was discussed.
- Update on Events & Education Subcommittee was presented. Significant progress done on the charter to become a formal subcommittee. Discussion of recent AHA webinars too.
- 2023 National Homebrew Competition overview. First rounds will return.
- Request to pause the 2023 GC elections for one year was presented by Executive Director Julia Herz. Reasons included interruption of group’s work due to COVID-19, allow time to establish formal guidelines on training and prep process for those who want to sit on a working group or subcommittee, and better preps GC members to sit on GC as they will first need to gain experience on a subcommittee or working group. GC members whose term will expire in 2023 offered a one-year extension.
